Charles David Burks, (David Burks), age 74, died suddenly at his Prescott home on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2018.

David is survived by his wife, Helen; and a brother, Bob Burks, in Texas.

David and Helen moved to Prescott in July 2015 and David became extremely active in the local musical community: composing, singing with the Prescott Chorale, tenor soloist with the Prescott Chorale, as well as serving as Vice President on the Prescott Chorale Board of Directors.

David was born in Texas, graduated with a Bachelor of Music and Education degree from North Texas State University and received his Master of Arts at Grace Graduate School Seminary in Winona Lakes, Wisconsin. He was an ordained minister. David served as a sergeant in the Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1973.

David was a prolific published composer and tenor soloist. Recently David’s “Prescott March” was premiered by the Central Arizona Concert Band at the Court House Square in July 2018. Also the Prescott Chorale’s recent December concert featured David’s composition written for a brass ensemble.

As a featured tenor soloist, David has sung with the Prescott Chorale at their local concerts and on this past summer’s chorale tour to Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic. David also served as the tenor soloist in Vivaldi’s Gloria, Rutter’s Magnificat, Rutter’s Gloria, Handel’s Messiah, Handel’s Four Coronation Anthems, and Faure’s Requiem. David sang under the baton of many world-renowned conductors such as Roger Wagner, Zubin Mehta and Sir David Wilcox.

David worked at various churches throughout his life as a minister or the music director for the adult and children’s programs while also giving his attention to his private voice students.

In California, David was the artistic director and conductor for the Torrance Civic Chorale from 1991-2015. David founded the Biennial Torrance Invitational Song Festival. David received the Excellence in Arts Awards for Music in 2003 from the Torrance Cultural Arts Commission.

David’s friends and family will remember him for his sincere love and kindness, his musical perfection, his attention to detail in everything he did and his delightful sense of humor. David was a dear, gracious and thoughtful member of Prescott’s music community. He is sorely missed!

David’s memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 2000 Shepherds Lane in Prescott.
