The Prescott Art Docents facilitate a variety of programs at the Prescott Public Library, one of which is Art Days for Kids, according to Youth Services Lead Librarian Jennifer Kendall.
The next Art Days for Kids is at 1 p.m., Friday, March 9 and is for children ages 6-14, Kendall said. They have been focusing on different artist and their styles lately, she said.
“I think Matisse is coming up and they’ve done Seurat,” Kendall said. “They talk about the artist, look at his works and they create something similar.”
For this month’s program, the kids will learn about the types of art commonly displayed in American homes in the 1700s and 1800s before creating their own black and white picture.
Another monthly program the Docents put on is the Caldecott Books and Art for Kids, Kendall said. It’s a miniature book club for kids in kindergarten through second grade. The Docents read a Caldecott book, a book awarded for its illustrations and each child gets a free copy of the book, she said.
“They read the story and they talk about the illustrations and they do a project related to the art in the book,” Kendall said. “That is a springboard for helping kids not only to talk about art, but it helps them start dialoging about the book and gets them ready for the book discussions coming later on.”
Coming up, the library is going to have a book club for kids ages 3-4, she said. The next Caldecott Books and Art for Kids is at 100 a.m. Saturday, March 17. Registration is required and can be done online at www.prescottlibrary.info, at the youth desk or by calling 928-777-1537.
There’s another program the Docents have been putting on called Art in June and it’s been going on for about 40 years, Kendall said. It’s a smorgasbord of art docents who pick a theme or artistic medium and teach the kids and make something, she said.
Library staff is really grateful for the time the docents volunteer and the love for art they pass on to the children, Kendall said. They take their charge very seriously and spend quality time preparing and putting on their programs, she said.
