Extreme fire danger forces another national forest to close

In this photo from Tuesday evening, June 18, 2002, smoke drifts from the Missionary Ridge Fire in the San Juan National Forest near Durango, Colorado. Now, as the American Southwest struggles with severe drought, national forests and parks in Arizona and New Mexico have been shut down as a precaution against wildfires. San Juan National Forest officials in southwestern Colorado are planning to close hundreds of miles of trails and thousands of miles of back roads to hikers, bikers, horseback riders and campers as early as Tuesday, June 12, 2018, to prevent the possibility of an abandoned campfire or any other spark from starting a wildfire.
