George H. Herzog

George H. Herzog of Prescott, Arizona, passed away on July 7, 2018, after a short illness. George (“Bud”) was born on Dec. 20, 1923, in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, to parents, Henry and Kathryn.

After school George joined the Merchant Marines at the start of WWII. After serving with the Merchant Marines, he joined the U. S. Army and saw action the Pacific. He served in Germany, Vietnam and in various parts of the U.S. When he ended his 20-year military service, he worked for Del Webb Corp. in Sun City, Arizona. While in Sun City, he met and married the love of his life, Margaret, in 1973. They moved to Prescott in 1992 and eventually resided at Las Fuentes. George delivered Meals on Wheels and participated in many charitable activities. He was a devout member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

After Margaret’s passing in 2012, George continued to live at Las Fuentes and had good times with his many friends there, playing bingo, playing Mexican Train and provided the music for the monthly Holy Communion services. He liked eating, whether it was the monthly pizza party or trips to Waffles.

George is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Kathryn; his wife, Margaret; and brothers, John (Jack), Thomas and Joseph. He is survived by four sisters, Margaret (Elmer) Birkeland of Maplewood, Minnesota, Mary Katie Wohl of Sacramento, California, Alice Kuhle of Mankato, Minnesota, and Elizabeth (Betty) Hannasch of Phoenix, Arizona; and two brothers, Peter (Jean) of Pequot Lakes, Minnesota, and Mark (Diane) of Phoenix.

He is also survived by his wife’s brother, Robert (Opal) Phillips of Manhattan, Kansas, and by his sister-in-law, Sarah Herzog of Spring Valley, Arizona. A Remembrance of Life will be held on Friday, July 13, 2018, at Las Fuentes (1035 Scott Drive, Prescott) at 10 a.m. A Memorial Mass will be held later at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with internment at the Prescott National Cemetery.

Arizona Ruffner-Wakelin Funeral Home assisted the family with final arrangements. The family wishes to thank all George’s many good friends at Las Fuentes, both residents and staff. George is in heaven now, eating ice cream, cookies and candy! We will truly miss you, George.
