Our dear husband, father, and friend, Robert “Bob” Charles Sprau, passed away peacefully on his 89th birthday, June 28, 2018, in Fletcher, North Carolina, in the presence of his wife and daughter.

He is survived by Gwendolyn Jane McNutt Sprau, his wife of 70 years; his daughter, Cynthia Jane Sprau; his brother-in-law, John “Duke” McNutt; sister-in-law, Diane McNutt; and nieces, Sharon McNutt, Linda Simmons and Jill McNutt. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles August and Helen; and his son, Mark.

Bob was born June 28, 1929, in Sandusky, Ohio, to August and Helen Sprau. He attended Sandusky High School where he met his future wife, Gwen McNutt. Bob and Gwen graduated in 1947 and were married a year later. He worked for State Farm Insurance as a District Manager until his retirement in 1988, when he and Gwen moved to Prescott, Arizona.

He was a tremendous athlete in his early years, having garnered 12 Varsity letters at Sandusky High School, and he was inducted into the SHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999. He was known for pitching a double-header against an Army team, with 21 strikeouts.

One of Bob’s greatest loves was boating on Lake Erie. He and Gwen were always ready to take friends to Put-in-Bay or Kelly’s Island, and there were many fishing trips with his family.

After moving to Prescott, Bob became an active member of the Prescott Lions, organizing several of their fundraising activities and being awarded Lion of the Year. He also worked with local law enforcement to head up the graffiti removal in Prescott, for which he was known throughout the community.

Bob and Gwen moved to Asheville, North Carolina, in 2006 to be closer to their daughter. They made many friends there and were known for being wonderful neighbors.

Bob will be remembered for his ready smile, his love of community, his humor, his hard work and easy-going nature. Rest in peace, dear husband, father and friend.
