Editor:

Many who visit the Dells, and the Peavine Trail in particular, assume the whole area is preserved open space. Sadly, this is not the case. The newly proposed Arizona Eco Development project will locate luxury homes in the middle of this unique landscape resulting in the Peavine being a trail through neighborhood roads, driveways and backyards.

This is a far cry from what visitors and citizens enjoy today as they walk, bike, run and horseback along the Peavine. What a different experience when houses loom above the trails and block walls cut off views and wildlife passages.

The Granite Dells is one of the most beautiful and remarkable landscapes in Arizona. Our community has long supported protection, acquisition and conservation of open spaces through citizen involvement, committees, funding, and legislation.

We, as citizens, have an opportunity to address this threat to the Peavine Trail in the Dells. The city is being asked to annex this area. Plain and simple, we have a voice here. Numerous articles and letters to the editor have occurred since this proposed development was made public last September. We need to speak up now to protect the Peavine Trial by letting our elected officials know the reservations and strong objections we have to any development that would alter the view shed and ambient experience shared by citizens and visitors.

Our council could save this local, state and national treasure, or irrevocably alter it for the sake of the few at a loss for the many. The Peavine Trail deserves our protection and preservation now and into the future.
