The Prescott Police Department has released name of a man shot and killed by an officer Sunday, April 23, as well as the name of the officer who fired the fatal shot.

Officer David Fuller, a police spokesman, said the deceased man is Wayne Noel Simard, 70, a “part-time Prescott resident.”

Simard “repeatedly” fired into nearby occupied structures in the 900 block of Hope Street, Fuller said, and then, once police arrived at about 4:10 p.m., he shot toward officers.

The SWAT team arrived and evacuated neighbors or advised them to stay indoors.

They also began negotiations with the Simard.

“During this time, (Simard) confronted officers with a firearm,” Fuller said, and Detective T. Ellsworth, a 17-year veteran of the Prescott Police, fired at Simard, killing him.

Fuller said no one else was injured.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the shooting.
